Every December, while we’re busy transforming homes across Oakville and South Mississauga into holiday showcases, we set aside time for something that comes from the heart.
Since 2009, Christmas Décor of Oakville has been decorating the homes of local military families, completely free of charge. It’s a program that started with a personal connection and has grown into one of the most meaningful parts of what we do.

The idea came from Don McQueen, owner of Christmas Décor of Oakville. Both of Don’s younger brothers have served in the Canadian military and been posted overseas during the holidays. Don knows what it’s like to have an empty seat at the family table at Christmas — and he wanted to do something about it for the families living that reality right here in our own community.
He believes unless one has family or friends in the military, Canada’s Armed Forces carry on their duties, and the public knows little about the quiet sacrifices they make. This program is his small way of recognizing those sacrifices.

We work with Donna Pickering, Program Coordinator for the Southwestern Ontario Military Family Resource Centre, Hamilton Satellite Office, to identify families who would benefit from this program. Working through Donna ensures families feel safe and respected so when Christmas Décor contacts them, they already know about us, what we do, and why.
There are several criteria Donna and Don work with to select families to decorate, but each of the military families will be facing the challenge of preparing for the holidays without their loved one. For all that these brave men and women do for our country, we are happy to give a little back to their families at the holiday season.
Regardless of the criteria, the families have been very grateful over the years to know that their situations have been recognized.

Once Donna identifies a family who would like to participate, we reach out to set up a time to meet with them in person. Don walks them through what’s possible, and they choose the colours and style they’d like. The display is installed, maintained, and taken down just like any of our regular residential installations — with one special addition.
At takedown, we always leave behind a lit wreath with a yellow bow. It’s a small gesture, but it’s our way of saying: someone is thinking about you and your family, long after the holidays are over.
This isn’t something we advertise. It grew out of something personal, and it’s stayed that way. But we’re proud of it — and proud of the 17 years and 26 families who’ve let us into their homes during what can be a very difficult time of year.

Our installation calendar fills fast — often by early November. Book early to secure your preferred dates and get the most out of your design consultation.
